Today, reflections on the significance of Women’s Health take centre stage. Additionally, diabetes is a leading cause of complications during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes. Pregnancy-related conditions like hypertension and gestational diabetes pose serious health risks to women and their offspring. The WHO also states that depression is more common in women than men, with an estimated 4.4% of the global population living with depression. “Interventions targeting NCD prevention can be particularly effective at various life stages. Early education on healthy habits for adolescents and middle schoolers can pave the way for lifelong health. Financial strains, caregiving responsibilities, and workforce exit due to NCDs highlight the urgent need for universal health coverage and support for unpaid care work” says Dr Nalini Saligram, CEO & Founder, Arogya World, An Ashoka Fellow.
Women’s participation in India’s labour force remains low and is declining. Various factors influence this, such as social norms, safety concerns, and unequal pay. Empowering women to make informed healthcare decisions can have ripple effects on family health. Initiatives providing practical guidance on nutrition and educational materials are essential for reaching urban and rural populations. While the benefits of healthy eating and exercise are widely acknowledged, achieving behaviour change remains a challenge. Collective efforts from schools, workplaces, government, NGOs, and individuals are essential to drive meaningful change and combat NCDs.
